In a standard turning machine, plain and profiled cylindrical components can be machined. However, many cylindrical components have profiles such as milled profiles, drilled holes etc. which cannot be machined on a standard turning machine. For such components, the turning machine needs to be equipped with additional features to bring drilling and milling tools at various orientations to the work piece.

To achieve this, turning machines are built with additional slides (X,Y,Z and C axes) with independent movements controlled from the Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) system. Such machines require specialized design to ensure the high accuracies required for the components for aerospace and defence applications, typically positioning accuracy of +/- 3 arc seconds and repeatability of +/-1 arc second. These features bring high precision, productivity and shorter lead times to the manufacture of complicated components in a single set-up.
