Development of web based technology innovation platform namely KITE by IIT Madras

Kite - Knowledge Integration for Technology Enrichment - is a technology innovation platform developed under the support of Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India to set up manufacturing technology innovation portals, enabling a virtual connectivity medium to bring together various stakeholders under one common goal - indigenization of technologies and a self-reliant India. The focus areas of kite include 1. Mother Technologies, 2. Smart Manufacturing, 3. Process and Discrete Manufacturing, 4. Digital Manufacturing. With the sanctioning of the proposal in October 2020 and release of funds in March 2021, the development of the platform went through several phases. The live launch of the kite - TIP was done at IMTEX 2023 and thereon the kite TIP hosts about 11000+ users from academia to industry.

Kite focuses on the following objectives: 1. Provide Connectivity & Knowledge Integration - create a charter to bring together academicians, innovators, entrepreneurs, industrial partners, young engineers and provide a repository of solution providers, resources, tools and knowledge base to solution seekers 2. Promote Collaborative and Contract R&D - provide a forum to bring together real-world challenges of the Indian manufacturing sector and solution providers for product development through collaborative and contract R&D route 3. Facilitate Skill Development - create assisted and self-learning tools for the dissemination of recent innovations, trends, promotion of innovation among fresh engineers, young entrepreneurs, and higher education students. Kite is designed with two platforms - a connectivity platform and a knowledge platform. Kite hosts a gamut of features under these two platforms that provide connectivity to all stakeholders of kite. Through kite, a pan-India internship program was organized and about 300 students across the nation were trained. A total of 15+ webinars have been organized through the kite platform. As a unique feature, kite offers an ontology based knowledge platform framework that indexes data, information and knowledge as a digital repository, with search-ability. With search and retrieval of data, kite boasts of a seamless integration of both the connectivity and knowledge platform through this integrated search tool. With promotional activities of kite in exhibitions and college events, kite is being propagated into engineering institutions including colleges and universities, engineering organizations and prospective investors. With further support from MHI, kite shall be steadied into a self-reliant and self-sustainable platform by incorporating subscription models.
